Becoming a foster parent in Georgia means providing a safe home to a child in the care of the Division of Family and Children Services. Among the safety and quality standards: all foster caregivers must be certified in CPR and first aid before approval.

The first-aid requirement

Georgia's Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) requires all primary and secondary foster caregivers to be certified in CPR and first aid, from a recognized organization, before final approval as a caregiver; this applies to kinship foster homes as well.

Certification must be kept current and is verified at each family re-evaluation, administered by DFCS. The certificate is one requirement in addition to the home evaluation, background checks and the assessment of parenting suitability; training costs are reimbursable.

Severe allergies and anaphylaxis

A recognized first-aid certificate covers recognizing and responding to severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), including the use of an epinephrine auto-injector.

How to meet it

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this requirement. It is in addition to the required training or assessment, and is renewed periodically.
